This new feature includes the ability to reset your device if it goes to the Security Lockout mode, following several failed passcode attempts. With iOS and iPadOS 15.2, if you forget your passcode, you can use your Apple ID and password to erase and reset your device.
9to5Mac reports that iOS and iPadOS 15.2 adds a new "Erase Device" feature for situations when a device gets locked for multiple failed passcode attempts. By tapping on "Erase Device," users are asked to confirm their identity with their Apple ID password, which finally results in the device being completely erased and reset.
The new choice is an important addition and the end of the older method, which needed users to put their iPhone or iPad into the DFU mode and fix the device through Finder if on Mac or iTunes on Windows.
Although, there is one catch, the device has to have an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection before it gets locked. Users won’t be able to connect to a network and will be compelled to go back to the older method.
Requirements:
- Your device must run on iOS 15.2 or iPadOS 15.2 or later.
- Your device must be connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network
- You must have your Apple ID and password that you used to set up your device.
How to reset your device
- Try entering your passcode until your device asks you to try again later from your device's Lock Screen.
- Repeat this step until you get the Erase Device option in the bottom corner of the screen.
- Select Erase Device and then tap confirm.
- Enter your Apple ID password to sign out of your Apple ID on your device.
- Tap Erase Device to permanently delete all your data and settings.
- When your device restarts, follow the onscreen instructions to set up your device again, restore your data and settings from a backup and set a new passcode.
